The Mews Urban Village revitalizes two blocks adjacent to Knoxville’s Old City, breathing fresh life into the urban context. The first phase, affectionately known as Mews I, site development incorporates an old car repair shop and empty lot into a lively live-work complex. Across the street, Mews II is located where dilapidated buildings once stood. The British mews and brownstone architecture styles plays inspiration for both developments.

In the first phase, this development skillfully integrates historical elements such as old brick walls with contemporary materials, including sleek subway tile and rich hardwood floors, creating interiors that radiate character and charm. The careful blend of past and present is evident upon entering, where the warm tones of the brick harmonize with the modern aesthetic of various finishes, providing a welcoming atmosphere that appeals to residents and visitors alike.
Externally, the development features an updated Exterior Insulation and Finish System (EIFS) facade along with revitalized windows, which enhance the building’s visual appeal and contribute to a cohesive urban aesthetic. This thoughtful design approach not only elevates the overall charm of the Mews Urban Village but also fosters a sense of community through private outdoor spaces that cater to residents and a public courtyard designed to encourage social interaction among community members. This combination of private and communal areas enriches both the residential and commercial experiences, making it a vibrant hub within the city.
The subsequent phase of the project, Mews II, confronts several challenges, including a cross-slope terrain and the presence of a permanent billboard that could potentially hinder development. Nonetheless, Mews II successfully delivers on its commitment to creating brownstone-style condominiums. This phase features two commercial spaces alongside twenty residential units, each designed with eight distinct floor plans that are artistically repeated throughout the building, thus offering a variety of living options that cater to different preferences and lifestyles.
The exterior of Mews II has been meticulously crafted to pay homage to the historical context of the area. The development showcases traditional masonry along the primary street, a design choice that roots the building in its surroundings. As the structure transitions around the site, the design evolves, incorporating streamlined features that reflect modern sensibilities while still respecting the past. Complementary stone and steel accents provide an elegant finish, further enhancing the building’s aesthetic and ensuring that it seamlessly integrates into the vibrant fabric of the local community. This blend of historical reverence and modern innovation solidifies Mews II’s position as a key element in the ongoing revitalization of this dynamic area.
